teen archer session, july 2006.

recording, playing.

Within six months of arriving in SF, I was looking for people to play and record with, but it took a while to find the right situations and get things going. Finally, stuff is happening and gosh I'm happy about it.

First, a few months back I recorded and mixed a demo for Oakland two-piece Teen Archer. The session was great -- a prototype for this guerrilla recording thing that I'm working out. I showed up at their practice space on Saturday morning with a laptop and a pile of recording gear. We set up and by early afternoon we were tracking. We spent the rest of the weekend tracking at a comfortable but fast pace. I liked the results: not perfect, but cool. You're making compromises along the way (practice spaces don't have isolation, you don't have time to needledick sounds or do 150 takes of each song) and the recording has some character based on that.

Anyway, it was a blast and the mixes came out well -- I definitely want to do more of these gigs. In fact I'm doing a session next month with Oakland's Lord God Bird and trying to line up some other mix work.

Meanwhile I've also been trying to get a band going. Last year's Girder session left me all fired up to play guitar more, and play more sludgy detuned screamy stuff. A drummer and I have been writing for a while, but thus far filling out the linup has been slow and painful. Still, good potential here.

And finally, I just started playing bass with a few guys from The Turks and Greenlight The Bombers. These guys are badasses and the music is awesome. Noise rock a la Jesus Lizard/Big Black/Unsane. We should be playing shows within a couple of months and I can't wait.

Making music rocks.
