Speaking of pregnancy, I finally installed new smoke detectors last night. In preparation for the responsibility of protecting a helpless newborn, so that he can one day grow up to doubt and resent me.
Did you know that there are two different types of smoke detector? One type detects smoke; the other detects heat. There are models that do both, but they cost more. After doing some research I bought the First Alert Dual Sensor. $48 for a pair from Costco. It turns out that these look pretty decent and they're built well too.
While I was at it I installed a CO detector too (Kidde 900-0076, $48 online somewhere). Because as their manual says, carbon monoxide is THE SILENT KILLER. I figure that's why we need a product called the "Nighthawk" to detect its presence.
