me and the birthday girl.
me and the birthday girl.

mom's bday.

This weekend was my mom's 60th birthday. Nobody believes she's that age -- she can pass for 10-15 years younger pretty easily. THE EVANS GENE POOL IS RELENTLESS.

My mom is one of my heroes. She's a nurse, and unlike me, she actually works at work every day. Up at 5 am, on her feet all day, 10-12 hour shifts, skipping lunch, dealing with fresh-out-of-school doctors, dealing with crappy work politics, dealing with unions that are too stupid for words. She's done this for over 35 years and she still loves her job and has a sense of humor about it. Her work ethic and ethusiasm would be enough to earn a lot of respect, but she's also a great mother.

Meanwhile, I sit at a desk all day. I've never saved a life, or made someone comfortable at a time when they simply couldn't. We eat free cookies and drink free Moutain Dew all day, we show up when we want... and we bitch about occassionally being asked to work 42 hours in a week.

Yet I get paid more than my mom. With all of ten years experience, I'm "worth" more than her. This feels very wrong.

Anyway. Rock on, Mom! You don't look a day over 90.
